Monkey on Yer Back by cypherx Monkey on Yer Back by cypherx
too much moldy peaches, methinks.

My hd went out and I lost about 20-30 hours of work on this. I tried to get a few of me geeky friends to recover the psd but to no avail. I basically only had it uploaded on DA and was able to use that as a reference point. There are parts I'm happier with and parts I'm not, but i had to fully rework it in order for me to have a high res version for prints and the like.

I've been working on it a few weekends now and got to that point where I can't really do much more on it and feel happy so i'm done.

sucks losing a lot of work as it's pretty discouraging and difficult to get yourself motivated enough to go back.

aw man- that's really aggrivating. But sometimes loosing the origional can be a blessing in diguise- I know you're tired, but is there anything else you'd change?

I know what you mean! I was about 75% finished with one of my works when the file got corrupted and I couldn't open it no matter what I did. I ended up using the latest WIP screenshot I took of the piece to finish it. It took me weeks to muster up the energy to do that, I was so discouraged!

Anyway yours ended up looking great!
cypherx Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
yeah, that's exactly what happened... i was like "where's the topmost layer?"... "no really... where is the rest of my damn work?" in the version I had saved in psd format on my external drive. it really took a minute for me brain to process that I could have possibly been so stupid as to not back it up once it was complete.

Anyhow, live and learn I suppose.

Oh, God, I can't even imagine losing that much work on an image..
How frustrating.

Still, it's very beautiful.

I'm pretty sure I commented on this when you first uploaded it, but god damn do I want one of those little golden monkeys. Like, SO BAD. I don't even like monkeys.
Alinedra Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2010  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
I love the lighting on the monkey XD Of all the positive comments i could give, lol, i choose that one. I am getting weirder in my old age.
Dragonfly22 Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I don't get what happened. Even if you completely lost the file in your hd, hadn't you finished the painting already long ago?

Either way, I see the mushrooms are missing but the new colours in the mask compensate more than enough for that.

losing the psd on the hard-drive and only having a small .jpg version on here was the problem. I had long since gotten a new computer and thought i had everything backed up on the external hd anyhow... so I go to make this into a print for someone who asked for a large size, and go to look in my finished paintings and find it's at a WAY early version of the painting. I freak out and look thru all of my psd files that are on the external, thinking maybe I named it something weird after the early steps... then it dawns on me after that fruitless search that I had probably never taken it off my desktop.

anyhewt, i left it alone for a while because I was ticked off about it and just thoroughly annoyed with myself. And a few weeks ago i decided to try working on it again and see how close I could get it to the original and i was going to post the original but I don't want to read "I liked the original better" har.

Dragonfly22 Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Aii, that sucks! I'm pretty much technology retarded, but I'd suggest you save, at least your paintings, into a pen drive, since you seem to be getting new comps all the time.

and nah, I think the new one rocks just as much, esp with the new masque colours.
good luck with the buyer!

this is actually from the last time I got it... I just hadn't had a reason to look for the original until recently

I dont know... i think the dress should of been a different color.

throw out a colour and I'll try it on for size
CalcifiedCrow Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2010  Professional General Artist
Maybe red. Or a blue. It's just that since its green it blends everything together too much. In a thumbnail size its hard to see whats going on. I don't know, maybe its just my eyes that find it hard.
cypherx Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
both great colours and I incorporated both into the painting, but i wanted to maintain the focal point and because the foreground and background, if I use either the dress becomes the area of focus as opposed to the girl/monkey... still open to other ideas though for certain.

Reminds me a bit of Linda Bergkvist, which is absolutelly a nice thing lol. Love the greens and sparkles, and everything in general. Her arms are a bit weird but I don't care, it all looks gorgeous.
grimfairyreaper Featured By Owner Sep 7, 2009
Love it! Most of the comments about the definition of the arms needing a little more definition to show the direction are sort of right it just needs the under arm defining! hell I can do this either way Im just bendy!

Really gorgeous piece tho and I got the song too!

the howler monkey makes me think of daemons from his dark materials books. woman was a freaking psycho...

and other than that, your comments and retorts make me smile. I like enayla's work and I like yours. the only way there could be a problem was if you were to take the work of someone else and call it your own. inspiration is what art is about. with a population this large, people, and their art, (and experiences and everything else ad nauseum) and vicariously their inspirations, are going to become eerily similar. so of course some people are going to have similar artwork. I don't see how there's any problem in that. but I don't know much, so whatever.

This is such a great picture it makes me chuckle. It seems like she's been waiting for that monkey to move for awhile!

Och, it's pretty, but I must to ask you for something. Can you paint the same picture but with white cat? Just for me...
noir-badger Featured By Owner Jun 2, 2009  Hobbyist General Artist
I think, it's wrong to copyright colours. I know that Coca-cola have done so, as have Cadbury (a chocolate company in case you haven't heard of them). So boo to anyone who says 'ooooohh it looks too much like Enayla's painting.' I don't really see any similarities. You don't see one artist paint a red balloon and then have people grouching at another artist for painting a red balloon as well...

Also, in contrary to nearly everyone else, I love the awkward pose. I know it's possible... my bf has shown me many a time the way he can pop his shoulders out. It's a little disturbing, but nonetheless a little exciting and slightly out of the ordinary.

I love the beautiful colours in her hair and the way you hint at form with a simple brushstroke. I really need to explore that technique oneday. It is so effective and looks like it would save HOURS of having to paint the tremendous detail of every little leaf and blade of grass.
demonsaya Featured By Owner May 31, 2009
O.o; Okay, having both you and Enayla on watch, I'm shocked that they saw a similarity. Honestly, who CARES if it's in the same color palette, or that there might be a mask on the girl. Having seen both, they're not even similar...

Beautiful piece. Saw the journal and actually decided to leave my two cents. ^_^;

sixAstray Featured By Owner May 28, 2009  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
This is beautiful, and i dont know about others but i think the pose is what gives this its extra edge..the elegance of the dress contrasted with the unintentional awkward stretch to keep the monkey away... :D
cypherx Featured By Owner May 31, 2009  Hobbyist Digital Artist
you're the only one! Well maybe three others, but thanks. I actually like the pose and that's not just because it's my painting. Regardless of if people couldn't place their arms back like that (I know several people who can so I'm not getting how no one else seems to), it shouldn't matter; if I want to draw someone with faces on their feet or noses as ears I think it's my right to do.

thank ya thank ya
Mollinda Featured By Owner May 27, 2009   Traditional Artist
As always, the colour palette and lighting are just divine. I always think your use of the hard brush is quite bold - I don't dare have visible brush marks like that! I don't always like them either, but I do in this. It's like a layer-by-layer if you work from the outside in :giggle: You can see how you've worked into the looser areas to give the defined detail on the bodice and mask.
comitee Featured By Owner May 27, 2009  Hobbyist General Artist
Gorgeous work!!! I love the textures you made on the dress. There's only one thing that seems weird to me: the girl arm's (the possition)but I don't know why, exactly. :)
whimsi Featured By Owner May 26, 2009
Really excellent work.. I really dig the combination of realism and little paintery details. I really like in all of your pieces where I can look closely and see individual strokes.. it makes it all feel so much more 'real' I guess, like I can see someone sitting down and painting this rather than only seeing the finished piece. I hope that's not creepy and stalkery sounding... >_>
