Cliché girl in the forest with butterflies bit (I called it that to the commissioner too, so it's not as an insult). I did try to paint it in the same way I might do traditional paints. I think it's lost at this size though.
"Unfinished" in that I just can't seem to figure out how to do the butterflies. I'm toying with some ideas, but either I use a reference and go too photo real or I just slap on some paint like one might throwup on the canvas... I'm not sure which I prefer yet. Hard to find that happy middleground.
tree brushes & photos were used in the painting referenced redheads for the features & hair Photoshop's lovely "leaf scatter" brush was used for a lot of the texture my typical paint texture brushes were also used on the dress/foreground/background softlight and screen for the light effects I'm ashamed of the hours that went into this "cliché" painting
I think that about covers it. I'll just update this when it's finished. All in all it's been a good commission in that everything wanted was clearly communicated to me, and in the end if I fail to deliver it's a personal failing, not one born from their being unclear.
any ideas for how to go about the butterflies are not only welcome but appreciated greatly... especially if you've had to encounter a similar problem before.
What I am at odds with, personally, is the impression that the fragment of the girl's dress lifted by the butterfly is "heavy". At least to me, this impression is a direct outcome of the imperviousness of the material. As for the butterflies themselves: I wish I could help.
I think this is wonderful, the contrast of the red and blue is sublime, the butterflies are brilliant, though the little girl does seem slightly scared (well either that or she is being hypnotized by the luminous butterflies). The eyes are brilliant, (though her face seems quite mature). It does seem quite traditional, like an oil painting perhaps, the whole piece is absolutely wonderful. It may be cliche, but this is so above that, it reminds me of Midsummer Eve by E Hughes, but that is a favourite of mine, so thats a good thing. I love the very soft and expressive atmosphere, the fact that the girl is in focus and that everything else is blurred is all the more striking and i know its incomplete but i think at this point it is very beautiful. Okay I'll stop talking now.
I love the looseness of this piece. I know it's not finished, but I think the roughness of it helps to emphasize the whimsical feel. And as far as the butterflies go, I think the direction you're headed with this w.i.p. is a good one. I would suggest putting more definition and detail into the butterflies that are interacting with the girl (the one lifting her dress and the two in her hair) and let the others remain very loose. The butterfly lifting her dress is a good level of detail for what I'm talking about here.
Just my opinion. I hope it helps. ^_^

I'm faving this, finished or not, because I just the brushstrokes. It may not have been your intention, but I really like the slightly worried and scared sxpression on the little girl's face, as if the butterflies are taking her somewhere she doesn't want to go. Her little face is really well done.
I agree with JuneBerry and have an additional suggestion.
Considering how many other references you looked at, I would assume you looked at photos of butterflies, but, in case you didn't, you should. Might try working from the images you get by searching Goggle for "blue butterfly" and just use lighter/more intense colours to get the feeling of light from them. Looking at the more detailed butterfly that you have, the wing shape seems a little strange, as is the dark line on the back wing.
