Journal Entry: Thu Jun 14, 2007, 4:38 PM

PLEASE SPECIFY IN THE DESCRIPTION OF YOUR IMAGE/WORK IN PROGRESS THAT IT WAS DONE FOR THIS CONTEST

-----------------------------------------------------------
Contest Grand Prize is $500, the runner-ups get pats on the heads & hopefully a cool piece to add to their galleries.

Let me announce the judges who've volunteered some of their time for this; I chose them based off of their artistic taste (I checked out their favourites). So in Alph order, here they are:

:iconblacktutu: :iconfatius: :iconhgriffin: :iconlenapo: :iconlabyrinthine-mind: :iconkingzog: :iconsaiaii: :iconxouba: :iconwildlifehoodoo:

Last time I wrote out an excruciatingly long journal with the rules and everything. This time I'm going to make it VERY simple.

- Contest ends August 15th, 2007

- The image MUST have been created after the start of this contest (date/time at top of the journal) & posted on DA before 12am (Eastern daylight time) 8-15-07

- Because I'm really wanting this to be an illustrative project, I am not accepting Photos or Photo manipulations, but illustrations that have photoparts and textures in them are definitely acceptable. Photos of your original painting are FINE, how else could you submit them?

So paintings are welcome, digital or traditional, or 3D (if you do a sculpture of course it would be illustrative in style), or whatever your specialty might be. I just want some killer illustrations that are fun, (possibly humourous, as I love a good laugh), well thought out, and something you can look back on and say "damn, I really went outside of my norm there". They must be original works, by you, out of your noggin.

- One Work in progress sketch of some sort is due before the end of the contest. I won't force a time on it other than that, but I would LOVE for you to post something earlier than the end of the contest. Post it in your scraps, but it must be on DA. This is a requirement, so if you go thru all the trouble of making a painting, and don't bother capturing a work in progress for us, you're going to be disqualified, it doesn't matter how good your work is.

Alright, now for the good stuff. The theme is simple: "Best friends" (your title will NOT be "best friends")

You can do anything you want with that. The "best friends" can be ironic, wherever you want to go with it. I do want there to be ONLY two characters (even if one is "imaginary" and we can't see it, but the one character we can see is interacting with it somehow). It can be two little kids, a robot and animal, an animal and human... WHEREVER you want to go. The catch with the "simple subject" is the title MUST tell a story that goes with your image (all Rockwell style with that angle♥ ).

And that might be the most challenging bit for some... telling a story with your illustration. Not just relying on the title to make it sound "profound" but really thinking about the story behind the image before painting it. Making the viewer know that there's a story there, even if they don't understand the details of it.

If I get one entry, and it's a stick figure, I'm going to leave it up to the judges, but chances are I won't be forking out any money. I am NOT judging this at all in a way that'll matter to anyone who's going for the prize... so my friends who enter do not stand a better chance of winning based off of our friendship (and they can't be mad at me if they lose which makes me a winner!) I want quality entries. I wish you guys luck, if you have questions ask, as long as they haven't already been answered; I won't feel bad if someone just didn't read thru the rules because they're "too long" & I refuse to repeat myself. If this journal seems rushed... it was. I just really wanted to get it up for you all so the interested parties could get a move on. There are NO limit to entries, but if I were you I would really focus on just doing one good one.

If you don't have paypal, don't bother entering, because that is the ONLY way I will make a payment, no exceptions. If you have issues with there only being one prize, think about the split of $100 and how useless it would be to anyone, and realize the reason for it was to encourage good entries, and discourage half-assed ones. Give the person who puts their all into it a reason to be doing so. ****Link to your entry in here (both the Work in progress, and the final). I'll be posting them in my journal when there's a good stack

:iconmisslindy:
do they need to be paintings? can they be drawings?
so.. would traditional drawings be too far from your original intent? i understand if it is :)

if actions speak louder than words,
and a picture's worth a thousand words...
how many actions are there in a picture?
:iconcypherx:
They can be anything you want (aside from Photos/photomanips)... hell, if you can sculpt, go for it & in that case photos of your sculpture would be accepted.
:icondeviouslyollee:
I was just wondering more of my skills are in illustrator and as you said digital painting does vector count (I don't mean vectoringof an image but actually making an image from scratch)!

I really like all genres... I mean if you look at my favourites they range quite a bit. You do what YOU'LL like the most, and it'll show thru.
